New Zealand Graduates

From 18 September 2004 the MLSB has maintained a Register of medical laboratory professionals in two scopes of practice: medical laboratory technicians and medical laboratory scientists.

At the above date, currently-practicing medical laboratory technologists gained the scope of practice of medical laboratory scientist.

Medical laboratory assistants, technicians and phlebotomists, unless in training or employed outside the profession as defined by the MLSB, were required from 18 September 2004 to be registered in the scope of medical laboratory technician.  By 31 March 2006, 1425 had gained registration as medical laboratory technicians.

The pathways accepted by the Board for registration as a laboratory health practitioner are given in the Board's policy document
Paths to Registration.

Medical laboratory technicians:

For registration as a New Zealand qualified medical laboratory technician, you need to hold an appropriate qualification (see below), and have at least twelve months of experience in a medical laboratory, and a sign-off from your supervisor stating that you can perform the required skills.

Qualifications:

The Board has approved a number of NZ qualifications as sufficient for registration as a technician. This list shows qualifications that have been considered and approved so far, and is not an exhaustive list of all suitable NZ qualifications.
  • QTA
  • BSc / MSc
  • QPT
  • BAppSci / MAppSci
  • NZ Certificate in Science
  • Certificate of Basic Training in MLT
  • Intermediate Exam in MLT
  • Grad Dip in Laboratory Technology
  • Certificate of Attainment in MLT
  • General Certificate in MLT

Experience requirements

For applicants with a suitable qualification, twelve months of medical laboratory experience is required, and the supervisor sign-off form in part two of the application form.

Medical laboratory scientists:

You may apply for registration if you hold:

  • a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc), or
  • a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology issued by the Board, or
  • a National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science issued by the Auckland Institute of Technology or by the Central Institute of Technology.

Note: only the first of these courses is currently being taught.  A new route to registration has been approved by the Board (see below)

Practical Experience Requirement:

Graduates of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree will be able to register with the Board immediately they receive confirmation of meeting all the course requirements. These graduates should apply to the Board on the application form, including the application fee.

The Board will normally issue the applicant an Interim Practising Certificate at no extra cost, valid for 12 months, during which the applicant will need to complete a minimum of six months full-time practical experience under supervision in a medical laboratory. Note that only postgraduate experience may be included within the six months required, and the earliest commencement date is the date on which a person completes his or her degree requirements.

The Interim Practising Certificate will state, as a condition of registration, that the applicant must obtain a report from his or her supervising scientist/pathologist certifying that the required competencies have been achieved to the standard expected of a medical laboratory scientist. See Scientist Certification Form.

Certified Copy of Qualification Required

You must enclose an original or a certified copy of your qualification with your application.
A photocopy may be certified as a true copy by a solicitor, Notary Public, Justice of the Peace or officer of the Court.

New Zealand graduates will be approved for provisional registration as soon as a complete application is received.

New Zealand graduates will be approved for registration as soon as a complete application is received, together with fees and evidence of course completion.  The MLSB intends to process all correct applications within 24 hours of receipt.
