New Zealand Graduates
From 18
September 2004 the MLSB has maintained a Register of medical laboratory
professionals in two scopes of practice: medical laboratory technicians
and medical laboratory scientists.
At the above date, currently-practicing medical laboratory technologists
gained the scope of practice of medical laboratory scientist.
Medical
laboratory assistants, technicians and phlebotomists, unless in training
or employed outside the profession as defined by the MLSB, were required
from 18 September 2004 to be registered in the scope of medical
laboratory technician. By 31 March 2006, 1425 had gained registration
as medical laboratory technicians.

Medical laboratory technicians:
For
registration as a New Zealand qualified medical laboratory technician,
you need to hold an appropriate qualification (see below), and have at
least twelve months of experience in a medical laboratory, and a
sign-off from your supervisor stating that you can perform the required
skills.
Qualifications:
The Board has approved a number of NZ qualifications as sufficient for registration as a technician. This list shows qualifications that have been considered and approved so far, and is not an exhaustive list of all suitable NZ qualifications.

- Certificate of Basic Training in MLT

Experience requirements
For
applicants with a suitable qualification, twelve months of medical
laboratory experience is required, and the supervisor sign-off form in
part two of the application form. Medical laboratory scientists:
You may apply for registration if you hold:
- a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc), or
- a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology issued by the Board, or
- a National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science issued by the Auckland Institute of Technology or by the Central Institute of Technology.
Note: only the first of these courses is currently being taught. A new route to registration has been approved by the Board (see below)
Practical Experience Requirement:
Graduates of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree will be
able to register with the Board immediately they receive confirmation of
meeting all the course requirements. These graduates should apply to the
Board on the application form, including the application fee.
The Board will normally issue the applicant an Interim Practising
Certificate at no extra cost, valid for 12 months, during which the
applicant will need to complete a minimum of six months full-time
practical experience under supervision in a medical laboratory. Note that
only postgraduate experience may be included within the six months
required, and the earliest commencement date is the date on which a person
completes his or her degree requirements.
The Interim Practising Certificate will state, as a condition of
registration, that the applicant must obtain a report from his or her
supervising scientist/pathologist certifying that the required
competencies have been achieved to the standard expected of a medical
laboratory scientist.

Certified Copy of Qualification Required
You must
enclose an original or a certified copy of your qualification with your
application.
A photocopy may be certified as a true copy by a solicitor, Notary
Public, Justice of the Peace or officer of the Court.

as a complete application is received.

Diploma Route to
Registration as Medical Laboratory Scientist
The
Board has approved a route to registration as a medical laboratory
scientist via completion of an approved graduate diploma.
